Fellowship Program

The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPM/RS) Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is accredited by the combined American Boards of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Urology and is a three year fellowship for gynecologists and two year fellowship for urologists. To qualify for this fellowship, the applicant should have completed or plan to complete a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology or Urology which is in good standing with the American Board of these specialties. Each fellowship includes 12 months of research, which may be basic science or clinically oriented, interspersed with 24 or 12 months of clinical rotations in Urogynecology, Urology, and Colorectal Sugery. The Fellowship faculty includes four Urogynecologists, two Urologist, three Geriatric Specialists, and a Radiologist. Fellows are trained in the evaluation and treatment of women with all pelvic floor disorders. Both surgical and non-surgical approaches to treatment are emphasized. Fellows are also prepared for academic careers via full participation in research projects, grant development, presentations at national meetings, and journal publications. Fellows must complete two graduate level courses during their training, at least one which includes quantitative techniques of biostatistics and other areas related to research. Completion of master's level graduate degrees concurrent with Fellowship Training is offered. The program will participate in the FPM/RS match with time determined by NRMP. The Fellowship application Form is through ERAS and selection and interviews are through our office. Interviews for the 2013 position will be scheduled in the late spring and summer 2012.
